Observation Method
Fluorescence
Cameras must have good sensitivity and low noise because strong excitation light can damage the sample. Although the signal yield is determined by simple physics (i.e., sensitivity × number of photons), some cameras, like the DP74, have a dedicated feature to shorten and simplify the fluorescence imaging process.
Brightfield
Accurate color reproduction is essential. Since modern microscope illumination is very bright, it’s rare to struggle with noise in brightfield images.
Phase Contrast/DIC
For phase contrast or differential interference contrast (DIC), the DP22 and DP27 have a color mode dedicated to imaging cultured cells.
Polarization
Many cameras designed for brightfield observation also work well for polarization due to their accurate color reproduction, such as the DP27 and SC50.
Darkfield
Darkfield is the second darkest microscope observation method, so cameras with high sensitivity and low noise are essential. Many of our cameras, including the DP74, UC90, and SC50, feature special noise reduction image processing for excellent darkfield images.
Specialty
4K
Microscope image resolution is determined by the resolution of the optics and the camera. The UC90 and SC180 4K cameras provide excellent resolution at low magnification (4x and 10x) or for stereo microscopes where the camera’s resolution is so important.
Live
A high frame rate is essential for obtaining smooth live images. Other important features include image lag and shutter type (i.e., rolling or global). The DP74 camera provides a fast 60 frames per second frame rate and delivers images with minimal distortion thanks to its global shutter CMOS sensor.
Still
Framerate is less important when capturing still images, but resolution, the field of view, and color reproduction are still essential. While all our cameras work well for capturing still images, choose the camera that’s right for you based on the above characteristics.
